How to log food faster: save your usual meals
The biggest reason people stop tracking is that it takes too long. The good news is that most of us eat the same things again and again, so a few habits can cut the time dramatically.
1. Save the meals you repeat
If you have the same breakfast most days, you should not have to log each ingredient every time. Save it once, then add it in one tap.
2. Use recents and favourites
Your last foods should be easy to find. Foodie shows the things you eat most for each meal at the top of the list, so your usual toast or oats is one tap away.
3. Scan barcodes
For packaged food, scanning is much faster than searching and typing. Just point your camera at the barcode.
4. Copy a previous meal
Eating the same dinner as yesterday? Copy it across instead of rebuilding it.
5. Log as you go
Doing it at the time takes seconds. Doing the whole day from memory in the evening takes minutes and loses detail.
6. Use quick-add when you must
At a restaurant or when you do not know the details, enter a rough calorie number and move on. A close estimate beats a missing day.
7. Cook once, log once
Batch cooking? Log the whole recipe, work out the portions, then log each portion as one item.
8. Do not log everything perfectly
Weigh the things that matter, such as oil, rice and nuts, and estimate the rest. Consistency beats precision.
9. Keep it quiet
Turn off notifications you do not need, and set a regular moment, like after meals, to log.
A two-minute daily routine
You do not need a complicated system. Try this:
- Morning: log your breakfast as you eat it, using a saved meal or your usual foods.
- Lunch and dinner: scan or tap, then log straight away.
- Evening: glance at your totals, and add any snacks or drinks you missed.
Most days that is only a couple of minutes in total.
Make it a habit
Habits form around cues. Pick something you already do, such as sitting down to eat, and attach logging to it: "when I sit down with my meal, I open the app". Keep the first step tiny so it never feels like a chore.
If you fall off the wagon
Missing a few days is normal. Skip the guilt and restart with your very next meal. You do not need to go back and fill in the gap.
Time-savers worth setting up
- Save breakfasts and lunches that you repeat.
- Put the app on your home screen so it opens in one tap.
- Use quick calorie entry for the days you are out and about.
- Log on the same device each day to keep your recent foods handy.
